7th Grade ELA Literary Analysis  Unit Plan Audience and Environment This unit will be taught to a class of seventh graders at Big Rapids Public Schools. This unit will be taught in a classroom that utilizes a writing workshop model that facilitates, encourages, and requires student-centered instruction and cooperative learning. Community Profile Big Rapids Public Schools is 87% white, 5% Black, 3% Hispanic/Latinx, 2% Asian, and 1% Native American. At BRPS, 82.2% of households have broadband internet. 95.1% of students speak only English at home. 17.4% of families have an income below the poverty level. The median household income is $75,833. Classroom Profile The average age of the students is 12.6 years old. Lesson Design and Delivery: 8th Grade Research Unit Plan and Calendar

8th Grade Research Unit: Unit Plan and Calendar  This unit is designed for eighth-grade students at Big Rapids Middle School during either the first semester or the first trimester of the school year. This would be one of the first units that we have in the class, so that students are provided with an opportunity to learn about how to conduct research and strategies for thinking critically about the information they find or are presented with. These are skills that will be necessary as the students move forward in the class, as well as while they prepare to go into high school. This unit would begin a semester that focuses on research; this unit would mark the beginning of the students’ semester-long research project. This unit, and its activities, are centered on research skills, including developing research topics and research questions, finding sources, and evaluating sources. My Philosophy of Education

  Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are essential goals of education. Using skills and information to find solutions to problems is an essential element of meaningful student learning. (Slavin, 2018) Some universally applicable problem-solving skills include patience, how to ask for help, compromise, leadership, and empathy. Additionally, appropriately using trial-and-error strategies and risk-benefit analysis are skills that could be taught in the classroom. Other problem-solving skills include planning, perseverance, self-reflection, and communication. I could foster skills such as these in my students through the use of cooperative and independent learning. I could provide students with learning activities that involve a combination of problem-solving skills and English skills, such as essays about service learning experiences, or social issues and potential solutions.
