Assessment: Strategies and Experiences

My assessment strategies for measuring students ’ understanding of reading selections differ based on the genre or type of text being taught. For example, teaching poetry often requires more written summative assessments, as students have to more clearly articulate their interpretations of more complex language. In contrast, assessments for short stories and novels are often more based on class discussions and other types of informal assessments. Alternative assessment strategies are determined based on students ’ needs and may involve a reduced number of questions to answer, or the ability to respond to questions verbally, rather than in writing. 8th Grade Research Unit: Unit Plan and Calendar  This unit is designed for eighth-grade students at Big Rapids Middle School during either the first semester or the first trimester of the school year. This would be one of the first units that we have in the class, so that students are provided with an opportunity to learn about how to conduct research and strategies for thinking critically about the information they find or are presented with. These are skills that will be necessary as the students move forward in the class, as well as while they prepare to go into high school. This unit would begin a semester that focuses on research; this unit would mark the beginning of the students’ semester-long research project.
